The format surprised me. I expected something more like a seminar. It was not that at all. We read something before coming and then talked about it — which meant the conversation went somewhere real. I came away with questions I had not thought to ask before, which felt like the point.

The CPF Life readings were well pitched — technical enough to be useful, not so dense that they required prior knowledge. The glossary cards were something I kept on my desk for weeks after. My only note is that the sixth session felt slightly rushed compared to the earlier ones, but that is a minor thing.

A two-day weekend felt manageable. The workbook is genuinely well designed — it is not a series of blanks to fill but something you can return to. My husband and I have used the ledger template three times since attending. That probably says more than any rating I could give.

I appreciated that nobody tried to sell me anything. That sounds like a low bar but after years of attending financial talks where the product pitch comes forty minutes in, it was genuinely refreshing. The facilitator kept things moving without being prescriptive.

The cohort newsletter is something I did not expect to value as much as I did. Seeing a clear summary of what we discussed — anonymised, but specific — helped me retain things I might otherwise have let go of. The SRS chapter in week four was particularly well timed for where I am in planning.

Straightforward and well organised. The two days were full but not exhausting. I would have liked a bit more time on the household conversation section — that was where the discussion got most interesting. Would attend another Senova programme if the topic fits.

Case Notes
Participant journeys through the programme
Case — Retirement Series
Starting point
A secondary school vice-principal in her mid-fifties, planning to retire within three to four years. She had a general sense of what CPF Life meant but found the vocabulary of annuity payout options confusing and had avoided looking into it directly.
Through the series
The reading binder introduced the Standard and Escalating Plan distinctions through a comparative reading, not a product comparison. Discussion in the cohort made it easier to ask what she called "the obvious questions I felt I should already know the answer to."
What changed
She left the series with enough vocabulary to have a productive conversation with her financial adviser for the first time. Her words: "I could ask proper questions. That was all I wanted."
"I went in not knowing what I did not know. I left knowing exactly what I still needed to find out."
Case — Reflection Circle
Starting point
A logistics manager in his late forties. He and his wife had different household habits around money — he tracked expenses closely, she did not. The difference had never become a source of serious tension but was a recurring friction point.
Through the circle
The reflection circle's readings on household conversation rhythms gave him language for a discussion he had not known how to start. The peer discussion notebook became something he shared selectively with his wife after the third session.
What changed
He attended with a workplace problem in mind and left with a household one partly resolved — which had not been the plan, but reflected how the format worked.
"I came to think about money at work. I left thinking about money at home. Both needed the attention."
